Students are learning what it takes to “Step Up”

On January 27, 2013, a total 26 students from ISU, IWU, Lincoln College-Normal and Heartland Community College underwent the Step UP! Bystander Intervention Facilitator training. The trainers represented three of the four schools. A small grant was received from MidAmerica College Health Association to assist with costs associated with the training. The students are expected to present at least twice this semester and also assist with training new facilitators in the fall.

Information regarding the Step UP! Program (from their website) http://www.stepupprogram.org/

Step UP! is a prosocial behavior and bystander intervention program that educates students to be proactive in helping others. Teaching people about the determinants of pro-social behavior makes them more aware of why they sometimes don’t help. As a result they are more likely to help in the future.

The goals of Step UP! are to: raise awareness of helping behaviors, increase motivation to help, develop skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns, and ensure the safety and well-being of self and others.

The 5 Decision Making Steps: Notice the event, interpret the event as a problem, assume personal responsibility, know how to help, and implement the help: Step UP!
